One of the greatest contributors to global warming is methane gas, a powerful greenhouse gas which is released when food waste is unable to decompose in landfill due to a lack of oxygen. A report released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) found that immediate reductions in methane emissions are the best chance the planet has at slowing climate change.

Councils around Australia are getting on board too by allowing us to recycle food scraps in our green waste bins. Some councils provide households with a ‘kitchen caddy’ but they tend to become smelly within a few days and are usually hidden underneath the sink.
